Three Containers, Infinite Uses

The client had 120,000 RMB (about $16,000). That’s roughly the cost of three shipping containers, delivered and placed. The question wasn’t what to build — it was how to make three boxes feel like a place.

The answer was a roof. A single, sweeping timber canopy that connects the three containers into one continuous space. The canopy tilts toward the river, creating a covered outdoor area that doubles the usable square footage at no additional structure cost.

Program

The building paid for itself in 14 months. Not through rent — through the cafe’s revenue. The market operates rent-free because it drives foot traffic.
