There’s a test we do on every site before we draw a single line.

We pick up a handful of soil. We smell it. We squeeze it. We see if it holds together or crumbles. We check the color — red means iron, grey means clay, dark means organic matter.

This isn’t nostalgia for craft. It’s data.

What Soil Tells You

The soil determines your foundation type, your drainage strategy, your landscaping potential, and sometimes even your structural system. Clay soil expands when wet and contracts when dry — a building on clay needs a different foundation than one on gravel.

Sandy soil drains fast but doesn’t hold nutrients. If your client wants a garden, you need to plan for soil amendment before you pour concrete — because bringing in topsoil after construction means trucks over your finished driveway.

The Rendering Trap

Most firms start with a rendering because that’s what wins competitions and lands clients. A rendering is a promise. But it’s a promise made before you understand the site.

We’ve seen projects where the rendering showed floor-to-ceiling glass facing south. The soil report came back three months later: expansive clay, requiring a deep foundation that ate the budget for the glass wall.

If you start from the soil, you design within the site’s constraints from day one. No painful value engineering later. No broken promises.

The Honest Answer

Sometimes — about 20% of the time — we do the soil test and tell the client: don’t build here.

That’s not a fun conversation. But it’s the most valuable thing we do. A bad site will cost you more than a good architect.
